Introduction

In the XVIII century privileged young Englishmen started to visit the ancient sites of the Mediterranean as part of the Grand Tour. They were later followed by Americans in search of their western cultural heritage, and literary works emerged as a result of these journeys.

The aim of this course is to show the importance of literary translation in spreading the work of English-speaking writers and travellers who lived in and wrote about the Mediterranean world that has always attracted and captivated them.

Theory and practice in literary translation will be given in the talks and workshops with specific texts of writers who produced their work while living in the Mediterranean, and also with examples of tourism  brochures.

Methodology

The course will combine plenary lectures as well as close reading and discussions. Students will normally have texts open for continual reference, illustration and analysis.

Preparatory reading before the course starts will be needed for some of the sessions.

Scope

These lectures introduce participants in the world of literary translation, showing its importance in spreading the work of English-speaking writers and travellers around the Mediterranean Sea. Participants will also be faced with tourism literature which usually requires translation into other languages.

The lectures draw on writings mainly of the 20th century and offer a variety of voices, approaches and models of the Mediterranean as a literary setting and as a tourist destination.

The course is designed to meet the needs of graduate and undergraduate students, teachers and professionals with a specific interest in this discipline.

It is also open to members of the general public interested in this topic.
